4 | October 2018 Photo by Mat thew Wonderly E D I T O R ' S C O R N E R I 'd never eaten a fig – or maybe even seen one in person – until Kay Poulos pulled one off of a tree in her back yard and handed it to me. Clearly, I'm not Greek. If I were, or if I were related to people who grew up in Greece, I probably would have tasted this fruit that's commonly found in Mediterranean nations – and in the yards of so many members of Fayetteville's Greek community. e fig I was handed was green-skinned, a little fuzzy and shaped like a fat teardrop. Hmm. On my own, I wouldn't have eaten the unfamiliar fruit. But Kay and her husband, John (the founder of Superior Bakery), bit into the figs happily so I did, too. Change hmm to mmm. It was sweet and delicious. And a beautiful red inside. I ate several more. Later, I was given some delicious fig preserves (pictured on top of the goat cheese on our cover), which were made by Amphitrite Manuel, who used fruit from her own fig trees. (at's also her yummy pear bread on the cover, made with pears from her trees.) In this issue, you can read more about figs, other delicious foods, cool businesses, beautiful art, and fun things to do while eating and drinking at local restaurants and bars. You can also read about the hurricane. Florence is gone but her damage and destruction will be felt for years. I hope we all do what we can to help the storm's victims. And I hope we keep supporting local businesses and organizations affected by the storm. at includes the Cape Fear Botanical Garden, where substantial flooding occurred. e garden is back in operation and is moving forward not just with repairs and cleanup but events. Like CityView's annual Food and Wine Party, which will be at the garden October 11. is bash is always a great time. Tickets are available. Come and enjoy. I hope to see you there!
