Chris Hull '16 F rom treasurer for Gamma eta Chapter to CEO of Cadence Bank, Paul Murphy Jr. '79 has always possessed an entrepreneurial, dedicated, and hum- ble spirit. When he was presented with the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, his re- action was one of pride in his team and reflection on the influence of Pi Kappa Alpha throughout the journey. "Membership in a fraternity teaches you about building relationships with individuals who have different back- grounds than your own." Brothers such as Doug Stroud '80 and Bob Atkins '80 taught Paul the importance of balancing pragmatic skep- ticism and the enjoyment of life. "I think I learned much from my friendships and consider it a great experience that I still cherish enormously. I'm so proud of the way the chapter house turned out and the energy fostered in our members today." Consistently striving for and attaining success has become synonymous with Gamma eta, which is clearly reflected in the achievements of Pike alumni such as Paul. Growing Cadence Bank to its current status was no small feat. It took years of steadily building upon a foundation, bolstered by a strong team. "rough the years, we had many challenges, but about three years ago all of our hard work started to show up in the numbers. Looking back on where we started, this is like a dream come true." Yet, teamwork and achievement are no stranger to Paul's professional life. As a member of the A Legendary Past, Ensuring Our Future campaign board, Paul strives to give back to the brotherhood that has provided him with life skills and lasting bonds. "I am happy to be on the commit- tee and participate because we needed a facility to match our strong legacy. We have something special we can build upon with our undergraduates because we are seeing a quality of young men that we can be proud of." For this reason, Paul encourages alumni to be grateful for the relationships they have through Gamma eta, but remember the chapter will always be there for them. "With any organization you're affiliated with, you should want to do more than your share. Don't be afraid to reconnect either volunteering your time or contributing to the campaign. Just take that first step; you'll be glad you did." Paul resides in Houston, Texas, and can be reached at paul.murphy@ca- dencebank.com.
