Zeta Phi www.missouribeta.com Beta Theta Pi – University of Missouri @Beta_Missouri Beta Theta Pi – Zeta Phi Chapter Connect with Zeta Phi Online POLICY CHANGES ON THE HORIZON Mizzou Seeks to Challenge Fraternal Structures F or some time, the Office of Student Life has been reviewing and challenging many of the rules and procedures surrounding frater- nity and sororities and how they operate. A task- force was formed consisting of a few alumni, students, and a group of University officials. In addition, an outside consulting firm was hired to make some recommendations. While we had some understanding of the direc- tion this project was going, it was not until the recommendations were made public that we became aware of the amount of control the Uni- versity desires to have over us. As we go to print, the house corporation and others are digesting the recommendations, and at this point they are just that, recommenda- tions. Some of the recommendations, such as more restrictions on alcohol, elimination of hazing and better risk management on social matters, we applaud. Recommendations sur- rounding and the involvement of the University in the rush/recruitment program are not satis- factory at this time nor is the amount of control the University is seeking. By far the most controversial matter for Zeta Phi is that there would be the requirement that all freshmen live in the dormitory instead of in the fraternity house. We believe enactment of these recommendations in their current form would be harmful to us from a brotherhood standpoint as well as from a financial standpoint. For over 50 years, our house has built its financial bud- get based on having 35-40 freshmen living in the house. The alternative would be to force se- niors to live in the house, and as you all know, that has not been the tradition for over 30 years and it is highly unlikely such an effort would be successful. Without the revenue, we would not be able to service our debt. The house corporation, chapter advisors, and several alumni are seeking the best approach to revising these recommendation so as to ben- efit from the positive changes and to reduce/ eliminate the negative changes that are now included. While we believe some changes are warranted, turning over control of our policies to University officials is not in the best interest of Zeta Phi, or for that matter, the University.
