Going, Going, Gone Story and photographs by Lynn Kutter ENTERPRISE-LEADER FAYETTEVILLE — Excite- ment filled the air in the Livestock Arena on Aug. 23 as businesses, organizations, parents, grandparents and others raised their paddles to purchase 133 animals during the 2018 junior live- stock premium auction held at Washington County Fair- grounds. "Every year this continues to grow," said Cheryl West, who serves on the Wash- ington County Fair Board of Directors. In 2017, $128,000 was raised at the auction but then as additional dona- t i o n s c a m e i n , c a l l e d "add-ons," the total grew to $187,000. T h e 2 0 1 8 l i v e s t o c k auction raised $1 33,000 following three hours of sales but West expects to exceed last year's total as additional dollars are given to help out local youth with their animal projects. Businesses and individu- als bid hundreds and some- times thousands of dollars to support the livestock proj- ects and make it possible for members of 4-H clubs, FFA, and other agricultural organizations to learn about raising cattle, hogs, sheep and goats. The junior partic- ipants are allowed to keep their animals and use the money to recoup expenses, start all over again for next year's fair or save the money in a college fund. The top sales this year included $4,000 for a market lamb shown by Addison Harlow, $4,000 for a market steer shown by Abigail Norsworthy and $3,900 for a commercial beef heifer shown by Paul Cole. "We're amazed every year just how generous the people are in this county," West said. "These people provide great opportunities for our kids."
