2 The Iota Iota Messenger Chapter Implements Pledgeship Policy Changes T he Iota Iota Chapter has enjoyed a very successful spring and summer. We donated over $55,000 to Children's Hospital of Alabama over the last two years, began the implementation of a new scholarship support pro- gram, and recruited another stellar pledge class for the fall 2018 semester. We are very excited about the state of our chapter and cannot wait to wel- come another class of young men to Iota Iota. Last year, the Sigma Chi International Fraternity announced new changes regarding the length of pledgeship and policies limiting pledges' exposure to alcohol. These changes will give our chapter a competitive advantage as other chapters struggle to adapt to the evolving new member education landscape on our campus and across the nation. While change is always challenging, I encourage everyone to focus on what remains the same at Iota Iota: the friendships, memories, and values of the chapter we call home. Our members are making an impact across campus and making Iota Iota proud. Ben Honan '19 was given the University's Chemical Engineer- ing Outstanding Sophomore Award. He serves as the chapter's scholarship chairman, and we are proud of everything he has accomplished in just two years at Alabama. In addition, Pro Consul Tommy Marrollo '19 serves as vice president of recruitment for the Interfraternity Council. Under Tom- my's leadership, the IFC has taken tangible steps to improving the safety and accessibility of recruitment for all students interested in joining frater- nities. These are just two examples of our brothers' accomplishments and leadership across campus, and we are proud of everything our brothers do inside and outside the classroom. Thank you to all our alumni and everything that you do for our chapter. If you are ever in town or want to reach out, please do not hes- itate to contact me at sguerrera@crimson.ua.edu or at (205) 587-2586. In hoc, Sam Guerrera '19, Consul I ota Iota was honored this past March with having not one, but two of our alumni named as Significant Sigs by the International Fraternity for 2018. This award is handed out to brothers who have achieved significant success, honor, and prestige in their fields of endeavor. For more information please visit www.sigmachi.org/sig- nificant-sigs. Brother Stewart McLaurin '81 was recognized for his successful career centered on public ser- vice in and out of the capital Beltway, including time with the American Red Cross and the Ron- ald Reagan Presidential Library. Stewart current- ly serves as president of the White House Histor- ical Association in Washington, D.C., a nonprofit organization that serves as an educational and historical preservation service to the "working mansion" that we all call the White House. Brother Reginald Hyde '80 was recognized for his 30-year career in the service of our country via the Central Intelligence Agency! Highlights of his career include four overseas assignments with two of those as station chief. His last as- signment was as the deputy under secretary of defense for intelligence where he managed a large portfolio of activities heavily engaged in the war on terrorism and the wars in Iraq and Af- ghanistan. Since his retirement from the CIA in 2013, Reg returned to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to serve as the executive director of the University of Al- abama Cyber Institute. A meet-and-greet reception has been scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, September 21, at the chap- ter house (the Friday of the Texas A&M game). Please join us as we congratulate these two very worthy brothers.
