p. 2 The DePauw Phi Never Give Up John Gee '71—How My Indiana Zeta Brothers Keep Me Afloat "I n the fall of 1967, I took a gamble on the men of Phi Delta Theta." When John Gee '71 made the decision to pledge Indiana Zeta, he was impressed with the spring class that Recruitment Chairman John Lundbald '69 had mobilized. John set out to enjoy the company of a group for at least four years but it resulted in many, many more. "The friendships that have evolved from my time at the Chapter House are what kept me in school and on a good path during serious personal struggles." During his time at DePauw, John was confronted with issues being able to maintain his scholarship. "My struggles financially at DePauw were sur- mounted by the help of my brothers and allowed me to continue my education." John became a successful attorney and practiced for 43 years. Despite his successful career, he struggled with alcoholism. John is grateful to his brothers, who were instrumental in helping him reach sobri- ety. "Without them, I may not be where I am today. I decided then and there that the debt that I owed to my brothers would be repaid." John and his wife, Susie, have designated half of their estate upon their passing to be gifted to Phi Delta Theta. John proclaims that the men in his pledge class were all trustworthy, intelligent, honest, and self- effacing. Three of his friendships made through Phi Delta Theta run deep. "Craig McGaughey '71, Merritt Alcorn '71, Pete Eberbach '71, and I all remain best friends. Our conversations are always respectful, candid, and of course, filled with gut-wrenching laughter." The friendships and support he cherishes today are some of the reasons he thanks Phi Delta Theta and wanted to give back to his Fraternity. Even though John is looking to the future and where he will leave his legacy, he still has made time for physical goals. John has dedicated a sub- stantial amount of time to being fit and active since the age of 41. "I decided to never get old." Now, at age 69, John runs 11 miles every other day, and on his off/recovery days, he stretches for 40 min- utes, shoots baskets, completes an ab workout, and does some light upper body work. John trains and aspires to be ranked in the top 10 for the 70-plus age group in the U.S. Both John and his wife, Susie, love to be sur- rounded by beautiful scenery. Two of their favorite places are Boulder, Colo., and Capitola, Calif. John is still a rock 'n' roll enthusiast and keeps a vast collection of vinyl and CD recordings. "Susie and I both love rock concerts and recently attended Van Morrison." John and Susie reside in Cincinnati, Ohio. John can be reached via email at sgee@cinci.rr.com.
