KANSAS SIG page 3 H aving already grown up in Jayhawk country, at- tending the University of Kansas was not a dif- ficult decision for Scott Williams '85 and neither was pledging Alpha Xi. Thanks to his father, John Wil- liams '56, Scott was already well acquainted with the philosophy of Sigma Chi providing lifelong friends. "The magic came from the camaraderie," Scott said. "I remember my dad and his Sigma Chi buddies and how they interacted when I was a kid. It made me feel comfortable and prepared me for life as a Sigma Chi." In 1981, Alpha Xi had 96 members living in the house. In Scott's pledge class, there were 42 men. "We knew that we had a unique opportunity to make a difference in the house. Throughout the course of our time at the house we felt a sense of pride about being leaders even as underclassmen." Scott served the house in many leadership roles, including as Pro Consul his sopho- more year, Consul his junior year (centennial year), Rock Chalk Review co-chairman, and on the Interfraternity Council. After graduation, Scott began working for KOCH Industries. After a four-year stint he decided to attend the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. Following earning his MBA, Scott's focus turned toward retail marketing and e- commerce. He would go on to run the e-commerce divisions for Boise Cascade (Office Max) and Sam's Club. In 2011 he was hired on as executive VP for Ca- bela's and in 2016 was named president. In 2017 Bass Pro Shops' acquired Cabela's, and Scott is excited about the opportunities that the future holds for him. "One of the things I learned while being a member of this fraternity is that Sigma Chi creates special connec- tions that make people bond immediately," Scott said. "I could be halfway across the country and someone will yell out, 'IN HOC!' It helps you feel like you know a little bit about that person." This summer, Scott was awarded the Significant Sig Award. The Significant Sig recognizes members who have excelled in their profes- sional careers. It's been over 35 years since Scott was initiated into Sigma Chi and yet a large group of his class still has a constant stream of mes- sages and has attended each other's kids' weddings. Scott and his wife, Amy, have three children and live in Overland Park, Kan. If you would like to connect with Scott you can reach him at skwilliams8185@gmail.com.
