PRAIRIE GROVE — A strong tradi- tion established by head coach Danny Abshier and reinforced by his assistants motivates each football squad to stamp a mark on Prairie Grove football. Entering the season his record stands at 190 wins against 101 losses with two ties. Abshier's trademark becomes striving for excellence with each repe- tition regardless of opponent, down or distance. The Tigers aren't satisfied with the status quo. They want to advance in the playoffs and contend on a champi- onship level every time they step on the field. OFFENSE Quarterback Each year since Cooper Winters started consecutive seasons (2011-2012), Prairie Grove begins with a new player assuming the starting quarterback role. Despite the changes, the Tiger offense has demonstrated continuity as a unit. "(Senior) Ethan Scates (5-10, 170) is lined up to be the next guy to do that," Abshier said. "He's eager, enthusiastic, a pretty quick quarterback that is very eager to take over the position." Senior Ethan Guenther (5-11, 224) is the backup and also starting tight end. Sophomore Knox Laird, son of defen- sive coordinator Craig Laird, is the third Tiger signal-caller. Halfback Senior Lane Dalton (5-9, 188) is the starter with junior Jared Harger (5-7, 154) sharing time with him and playing a bunch according to Abshier. Sophomore Cade Grant (5-10, 170) has got some skills, and must show coaches he can play on the varsity level. Fullback Senior Garrett Heltemes (6-0, 178) moves into the starting lineup after carrying a lot in a reserve role in 2017. "Garrett's looking to have a good year," Abshier said. "He had a decent year the last couple of years training time, and he's bigger than ever. He looks like he's getting taller every day to me. He's eager, he's also starting at the defensive end. Junior Keiandre Hobbs (5-6, 150) is a backup coaches think can contribute. Junior Foster Layman (5-9, 165) and Cade Walker add depth. Wingback Prairie Grove will get some interesting looks at the wingback position. Senior Kaine Caswell (5-9, 148) starts. A pair of new faces, both of whom have coaches talking about their ability, may also see action. Senior James Millwood (6-2, 205) and sophomore Trey Bargas play wingback.
