FARMINGTON — The Cardinals aim to continue making strides in the 5A-West all the way into Farmington's first appearance in the playoffs since becoming a 5A school. Head coach Mike Adams knows the program is edging closer to achieving its goal. His head coaching win-loss record stands at 196-139-2, four wins away from reaching the 200 career victories mile- stone. OFFENSE Quarterback Seniors Seth Swain (6-1, 188) and Eric Hill (5-11, 170) battle sophomore Tate Sutton (6-0, 175) for the starting job. Adams said both seniors have done a really good job while Sutton led the junior high team the last couple of years. Tailback Seniors Reid Turner (5-10, 185), Dimariae Donovan (5-6, 145), and Tony Mayo (6-0, 186) stack the backfield. "We feel like that's going to be a real position of strength for us," Adams said. "We feel like we've got five kids that can get in there and play on Friday nights. Jeremiah Lara (5-6, 150) is a guy, who moved here from Fayetteville in the spring and has done a good job for us at tailback. Trace South (5-10, 156) is a junior, who played some tailback on our JV team last year. He finished in the top 10 in the decathlon this summer. He's a very good athlete, and he has some real aggressiveness at the position." Fullback Coaches crossed trained Turner and Donovan both at that spot. Senior Sean O'Connell (6-1, 220) moved from offen- sive line to fullback during the season last year and had a good spring and early summer. "He's a big kid, he's 6-1, and about 215," Adams said, noting, "Rhett Rominger (6-0, 215) is another senior who's been hurt the last two years. He hasn't been able to play, but he's a 6-foot, 220-pound guy that can run a little bit and has great strength. He's a 300-pound bench- presser. So, those are two big guys that we can work in there that we feel pretty good about." Wide Receivers Junior Drew Sturgeon (5-10, 155) moved up to varsity for the final game of the season as a freshman in 2016 and became a starter as a sophomore. He had the most catches of any Cardinal in 2017 with 42 receptions for 613 yards, a 14.6 aver- age, with 4 touchdowns. Sturgeon earned All-Conference honors, was a finalist for the NWA Touchdown Club Newcomer 12 | EntErprisE-LEadEr WEdnEsday, aug. 29, 2018 2018 Football Preview ADAMS CLOSES IN ON 200 CAREER WINS AS CARDINALS PUSH FOR PLAYOFFS MARK HUMPHREY ENTERPRISE-LEADER The 2018 Farmington varsity football squad benefits from ongoing competition at several key positions including quarterback and tailback. The makeup of opponents among the 5A West shifted, which is advantageous in reducing travel for Farmington as the Cardinals eye making the playoffs.
