THE SKINNY Huntsville returns to the 5A-West Conference after spending the last four years in the 4A-1. The Eagles replace Maumelle, which moves to the 5A-Central. … The lack of numbers won't help the Eagles' cause with the move since Barnhill said they will have only 35- 36 players. … A hand injury to offensive tackle Cody Ogden during the offseason means Huntsville will start the season with just juniors and sophomores on the offensive line. Ogden, who is also the team's leading returning tackler, is expected to return during for most of conference play. Meanwhile, Bubba Rhoden and Colby Shepherd are returning starters on the line … Sean McCone, a three-sport athlete, returns at quarterback after he threw for almost 1,800 yards and 21 TDs and ran for more than 550 yards and seven scores. … McCone will have a pair of experienced receiv- ers as Tyler Welch caught 21 passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns, while Blake Whittington added 18 catches for 365 yards and eight TDs. … Welch and Whittington will see time in the defensive backfield. Welch recorded 47 tackles as a safety last year, but Whittington led the team with three interceptions. … Rain Turner returns on the defensive line, where he recorded 37 tackles, and he is also pushing for a spot on the offensive line. COACH SPEAK "The move to Class 5A will be a challenge, but it will be a good thing for us. It will be a challenge for us with our numbers. We can compete, but our biggest thing is depth. We might run into some teams that have 70 players, and some of them have had some success. We're pretty seasoned going into the season as far as having kids that know what to do and how to do it, but the problem is we don't have a lot of backups. It is what it is, so we'll have to deal with it and move on." — Henry Apple • @NWAHenry SCHEDULE Aug. 31 ................................ THE SKINNY Harrison hopes to build off last year's success as the Goblins grabbed a share of their first conference title and won their first playoff games in 15 years. … The offense will be highlighted by Gabe Huskey, who had more than 2,200 combined yards rushing and receiving and 31 TDs before he was injured in the playoff game against Hot Springs Lakeside. … The Goblins have experienced hands at receiver with Thailer Lovell, Kaden Jones, Rilee Jones and Colton Shaver, while the quarterback position is a two-man battle between junior Ben Johnson and sophomore Cole Keylon. … Hayden Vanderpool, strictly a defensive lineman last sea- son, will split his time with the offensive line, while Justin Roland moves to offensive tackle after starting on the defensive line last year. … Both is the Goblins' defensive leader at inside linebacker as he recorded 63 tackles and a quarterback sack a year ago. … Collin Ballard had 36 tackles last year as outside linebacker and is the player Harrison can move to the defensive line if needed. … The Goblins' receivers will also double up on defense as Rilee Jones and Lovell play the cornerback roles, while Shaver and Huskey will see time in the safety slots. … Hunter Holtby, a junior running back, also saw time at kicker and hit 55 of 61 extra-point attempts last season. COACH SPEAK "We obviously have a challenging schedule in our conference. We have to go to Morrilton, to Alma and to Greenbrier. Those will be three difficult tests, but we are excited about the season. THE SKINNY Farmington will face three teams from the 4A-1 Conference before starting 5A-West play at Clarksville on Sept. 21. The Cardinals were a member of the 4A-1 before being bumped up to Class 5A in 2014. … Farmington last made the playoffs in 2013 when the Cardinals finished 6-4-1. …. Adams begins his 15th season as coach at Farmington. . … Each playoff team from the 5A-West last season won first-round games. … Farmington has added Cody Napier, who formerly coached at Rogers Elmwood, to its staff. … Adams likes his depth at running back but said the Cardinals must improve defensively to improve on last season's 4-6 record. COACH SPEAK "We averaged 34-35 points during the con- ference season but we averaged giving up like 39," Adams said. "We gave up too many big plays last year and our biggest prob- lem was that we didn't stop the run very well. So, we've got to get better on defense and that's where our focus has been. We're trying to be a more physical team and do a better job of tackling." — Rick Fires • @NWARick SCHEDULE Aug.. 31 .................at Prairie Grove Sept. 7 ...............................Gravette Sept. 14 ......................at Pea Ridge Sept. 21 ....................at Clarksville* Sept. 28 ................................Alma* Oct. 5 ...........................Greenbrier* Oct. 12 ........................... at Vilonia* Oct. 19 ...................... at Huntsville* Oct. 26 ........................... THE SKINNY The Panthers will operate out of the single-wing again this season, and Coach Buckner said the year of experience in the offense will make a tremendous difference this season. … Nicholas Buckner trig- gers the ancient offense as spinner along with Jamie White. Both players will play significant roles as both can pass and are effective runners. Last season, Buckner, the coach's son, ran for 1,266 yards until he was injured in week eight. White accounted for more than 200 yards against Morrilton. The two spinners — one is right-handed and the other left-handed — give the Panthers two different attack plans at the same time. … Depth continues to be an issue at Clarksville, but Buckner is encouraged with the numbers in the program. … Clarksville has not won a conference game since 2013 other than by forfeit. … The 5A-West looks a little different this season with Maumelle out and Huntsville in. … Three games to start league play loom large for the Panthers. Clarksville will host Farmington and Huntsville sandwiched around a road trip to Harrison. If the Panthers can win two of their first three conference games, they could be in the hunt for a playoff bid. COACH SPEAK "We're sticking with the single-wing," Clarksville coach Khris Buckner said. "We had a lot of success with it. We averaged 403 yards per game, which was up quite a bit from the year before. We've expanded it and made it better, I think. We just had a coach in from Florida to help us with some new wrinkles. So I'm real excited. We've got what we really do well, and now we've added to it and progressed. I think this is the year we can really take off in the offense." — Chip Souza • @nwachip SCHEDULE Aug. 24 ...................... at Booneville Aug. 31 ............................... at Paris Sept. 7 ............................... at Ozark Sept. 21 ......................Farmington* Sept. 28 ...................... at Harrison* Oct. 5 ............................
