THE SKINNY Northside started a number of sophomores and juniors last season and struggled early before finally hitting its stride with wins against rival Southside in the season finale, and Springdale Har-Ber in the opening round of the playoffs. … Senior QB Derrick Wise has a full season of experience after making the move from running back and should put up big numbers this season after com- piling 2,400 offensive yards a year ago. … The Grizzlies are loaded on defense with DE Raytel Rone, LB Anthony Travis and lockdown defenders Greg Washington and Elijah Tabut. All are drawing college interest. … Northside faces a tough mid-season stretch where it plays four out of five games on the road. … Travis somehow flies under the recruiting radar but at 6-2, 215, he is a force with 130 tackles a year ago and 7.0 sacks. COACH SPEAK "We played a lot of young guys last year, a lot of juniors. We took our lumps early, but got better as the year went on. So we expect to have a good football team. You never know, and injuries play into it, but I really feel like if we can stay healthy, we've had a great offseason, a great summer and spring practice. This is a great class, so I really believe we can be in the hunt to win a con- ference title." — Chip Souza • @nwachip SCHEDULE Aug. 24 ............. THE SKINNY Dawson begins his second season with the Bulldogs after arriving from Russellville, where he led the Cyclones to the Class 6A state championship in 2016. He also won three state champion- ships with Nashville. … Fayetteville lost four consecutive games then won six consecutive before losing to Bryant for the second time in the playoffs. The Bulldogs play at Bryant on Sept. 14. … Darius Bowers is drawing a lot of recruiting attention after passing for nearly 3,400 yards and 34 touchdowns as a junior. Bowers said he won't announce a decision for college until after the season. …. Dawson calls offensive lineman Cameron Ervin the best in the league and says junior Connor Flannigan could develop into one of the league's best receivers. Flan- nigan caught 24 passes for 392 yards last season. …. Senior safety J Beasley heads an inexperienced secondary after making 54 tackles a year ago. COACH SPEAK "Barrett Adams and Connor Flannigan are two guys who bring a lot to the table. We've also got Luke Charboneau and some young kids at receiver who are going to be really good. I'm really pleased with our depth on the defensive line. We can play eight kids there and I like our linebacking crew. We're inexperienced in the secondary, but I think we're getting better back there." SCHEDULE Aug. 24 at St. John (Mo.) Vianney Aug. 31 ................ Owasso, Okla. He hit a season-long of 43 yards, and his only miss came from 50 yards. COACH SPEAK "Everybody knows about our skill players and know we have some of the best skill guys around. We have some question marks up front that we have to answer, and that's something we have to work on. Our offensive line definitely has to step up and give us some time to make some plays, and I think there are some other people that are ready to have breakout years. We finally have a home stadium, and I think the kids are excited about it. You talk to them and ask them about it, and they know it's a place we can call home." — Henry Apple • @NWAHenry SCHEDULE Aug. 24 ................at Owasso, Okla. Aug. 31 ........ Elliot Nimrod, who handled kickoffs, also returns after recording 30 touchbacks out of 81 kickoffs. COACH SPEAK "Our challenges are we are breaking in some new young faces — some new starters. They're ready. They've been in our program. We have some guys who have played, and we have a new core of leaders who have been led for two years. It's their time, so they are learning the process of our expectations of them. We're picking up some pieces that need to be cleaned up. We'll need those guys that we are counting on to step up, and the new faces are going to have to come on in a hurry." — Henry Apple • @NWAHenry SCHEDULE Aug. 25 ........ Midwest City, Okla.
