Page 3 A t the beginning of the spring semester, chapter leadership met and discussed what it means to be a Texas Alphan. Together, we decided that to be a brother of Texas Alpha was to exemplify success in every area, be it academics, philanthropy, community involvement or social engagement. We set our bar high and we are proud to say that our members met—and in many cases exceeded—our expectations over this past year. CHAPTER GPA RANKS FOURTH In fall 2017, Texas Alpha had the fourth highest GPA of any IFC fraternity on campus, with a chapter average of 3.2. This is a major improvement from our placement in the spring of '17, which was 15th among all chapters. Our change in ranking was due in no small part to the fall 2017 pledge class, which secured the second highest new member GPA among IFC fraternities. The chapter GPA was even higher this spring, coming in at a 3.3. We attribute these achievements to a successfully implemented academic probation program for members with a semester GPA of under 2.75 and a general increase in new member selectivity and quality. BROTHERS ACHIEVE NEARLY 1,000 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE Texas Alpha remained committed to our philanthropic goals as well. In the spring, we served the Boys and Girls Club by participating in a Field Day with the Austin chapter. We also hosted Puppies with a Purpose with AXO women where shelter dogs were brought in and people could play with them for an entry fee. Over the semester, the chapter logged 985 hours of service and raised $3,305. TEXAS ALPHA SECURES LARGEST NEW MEMBER CLASS This spring, Texas Alpha recruited the largest new member class on campus with 23 men initiated. Fall rush has been well underway during this summer and we are excited to bring in the next generation of Texas Alpha men. Based on our current trajectory, we expect this new class to be larger than any fall class we've had in recent years. LEADERS ON CAMPUS Chapter officers attended the Ladder of Risk presentation given by Dr. Lori Hart on February 4 as part of the programming provided by the SFL office. The chapter has also been highly involved with IFC to ensure we build the right regulations and measures into our community. In a continued effort to stay involved on campus this semester, Seth Beavers '16 was initiated into the Texas Silver Spurs and Nick Gagnet '17 was initiated into Texas Cowboys. Additionally, four members of Texas Alpha were accepted into Wall Street for McCombs, one of the most competitive business organizations on campus. These four members accounted for more than 21% of all students accepted into Wall Street for McCombs this year. Texas Alpha has made great progress over the last semester in many areas. This growth would not have been possible without our Executive Director, Matt Kifle, Ohio Nu '12, our Supervisory Committee members, Mike Streich '04, Eric Keller '94 and Neil Bowie '83, members of the Austin Limestone Management Corporation, Spencer Stewart '91 and Jason Martin '01, Mark Mayer '90 of the Texas Alpha Endowment Fund, and Scott Noble '81. The house is always open for a visit from fellow Texas Alphans, brothers of Phi Kappa Psi, or their families.
