editors corner Healthy Habits Y ikes! Its resolution season again. With visions of sugar plums still dancing in my head, this time of year usually serves as an ugly reminder of all the fitness goals I failed to reach last year. Year after year, I expect myself to morph from who I am in January into Jillian Michaels by December. This issue of CityView, with stories about nutrition and wellness, is certainly a good way to jump start fitness resolutions, and reading about Fayettevilles own CrossFit standout, Nate Schrader, makes me want to lace up my shoes and throw some weight around the gym. Rebekah Sanderlin, senior editor Theres a new saying showing up on t-shirts and bumper stickers: Strong is the new skinny. I dont know if the fashion magazines will ever embrace it, but I like the sound of it. This year Im setting a different kind of resolution, one of healthy acceptance. Come December 31, 2013, I want to be able to look back and say, This year I did the best I could for myself and those around me. Rather than knock myself for not being able to squeeze into size 6 jeans yet, this year Im going to remind myself of how far Ive come. In the last eight years Ive had three babies, moved twice, saved my marriage and reinvented my career and, after having those babies, Ive lost a combined total of about 165 pounds a whole, healthy-sized person. I know that I will get back to the size I want to be, someday. In the meantime, Im just going to get and stay strong. T his issue focuses on fitness and wellness and that means something different for everyone. For me, its not a resolution, its a lifestyle choice. Well, most of the time that is. Being part of an active community that shares those sentiments makes it easier to get moving and set goals. On any given weekend in Fayetteville there is some type of fun run or walk to benefit a worthy cause. In this issue we spotlight a local business owner who ranked nationally in the CrossFit Games (p. 36), two festive annual events, the Polar Bear Plunge at Fort Braggs Smith Lake (p. 31) and Ryans Reindeer Run (p. 62). Both events brought out all types of athletes: the serious competitors, families, those in it just for fun and even the dogs. The costumes were creative and the fun was contagious.
