In a way, her contribution (memorialized with a plaque under the bay window of the chapter house addition) stood as a metaphor of a young girl's life—a place where she would look out and see the world, all it had to offer and the people she could meet. In the years aer, when Joan, "Mamo," visited the university, she would always make a point to show her family the window and plaque. "She took pride in being able to honor her mother in that way and continue her legacy aer she was gone," Sarah Manda Halcomb '01, Joan's granddaughter, said. "Now, I feel like the window is my grandmother. Mamo was always one to stand out in a crowd, memorable to everyone she met." In January, Joan passed away and a few days later Sarah heard about e Key to Excellence campaign. Instantly, Sarah knew she wanted to honor her grandmother and great-grandmother with a family donation to the newly renovated chapter house. "What a legacy it is to me and my family that we get to continue to honor Mamo and my great-grandmother," Sarah said. "I look forward to showing my family the window and telling stories of my time in the Kappa house, experiences with Kappa aer college, and the wonderful memories of Mamo and her mother." Joan's son, Gil Manda, grew up with a familiarity of Kappa Kappa Gamma through his mother and grandmother and was motivated to be a part of the family gi with his daughter, Sarah. "Watching my mother continue her friendships through her association with the Kansas City Alumnae Association and her monthly KKG bridge club— then seeing my daughter grow ethically, morally, and socially while a Kappa in college and build those relationships aerward— have continued to enrich my perspective," Gil said. "I also loved observing my daughter and mother build an even stronger relationship with each other through the Kappa Kappa Gamma sisterhood." It's Sarah's hope that someday future generations will see the eta Chapter window and appreciate how much the Kappa organization meant to the women of her family. "Give what you can; what you are able," she says to those hesitant to donate. "rough your gi you will be sharing this opportunity for women now and in the future. It is so easy to see through the window of Kappa." Sarah and her husband, John (who is also a Mizzou graduate), have two children, George and Kate, and live in Franklin, Ky., where the couple works on John's sixth-generation farm.
