"I had a wonderful time during college - and that's primarily due to being a Psi. Since then, the dozens of Brothers I continue to call friends have brightened my life. I have gotten a great return on my initial investment and want to give back to ensure follow-on generations of Psis will be as fortunate." – Jim Mallon '81 Psi Chapter: Honoring Our Past, Building Our Future E nsuring the academic, leadership, and character development of our members and assisting the Chapter in recruiting and re- taining quality men remain the top goals of our Alumni. Our home at 608 Preston Place is instrumental in achieving these goals by providing a living and learning center that also serves as a symbol of our shared vision of excellence. Our 96 year-old Chapter House plays a significant role as a home away from home for our undergraduate Brothers. This last phase will continue to address the immediate needs of our Active mem- bers and prepare for future generations of Sigma Chis. The four areas of emphasis are safety, competition, value, and tradition. Phase 1 (Complete) • Increased total square footage from 6,587 to 11,642 • New addition with dedicated social and activity space including Chapter Room and multipurpose space with rear and side terraces • All new HVAC and energy-efficient design • New driveway and parking lot • New bathroom facilities Phase 2 • Renovates main house with new dining and kitchen facilities • Adds four bedrooms and new bathrooms for 20-22 residents • Improved site design to include parking and landscaping to comply with city standards Safety. Safety is among our top priorities. The electrical, heat- ing, and cooling systems of the old house have outlived their life Completing Our Project Phase 2 Renovates 96-Year-Old Chapter House expectancies. The renovation subjects us to today's more strin- gent building and fire codes, requiring mandatory upgrade of fire sprinklers, fire-rated doors, and emergency stairs and exits. Competition. Sigma Chi cannot continue to offer the same housing we have provided for years with a realistic hope of re- maining a leader within the University of Virginia Greek commu- nity. We face significant competition from other fraternities and modern, private apartments. Sigma Chi must offer a safe, attrac- tive, and efficient facility to be competitive in the marketplace. A newly renovated and expanded home will make the Chapter House a more attractive option for prospective members. Value. Today, students and their parents expect more for their housing dollars. Residence halls and off-grounds housing options offer modern amenities that most fraternities cannot. A renova- tion would add a significant amount of value for live-in members, providing parents and students with a fraternity option that offers a comfortable and appealing living and academic environment. Tradition. A committee of Alumni volunteers considered numerous options for the House renovation, toured several other UVA fraternities to assess their amenities, and contracted with a highly respected Charlottesville architectural firm to design the House's beautiful Chapter Room addition (Phase 1). The same firm has prepared the plans for Phase 2, shown in this brochure. The Psi of Sigma Chi House Corporation is committed to invest- ing the necessary time, talent, and financing to ensure that future Sigma Chi Brothers have an experience similar to the one shared by so many of our Alumni. "Giving to this campaign is an investment in Psi, helping to ensure that future Brothers have the same for- mative experience of being a Sigma Chi at Virginia. To continue attracting the finest young men at UVA, it's critical that Alumni come together to help build a better and more competitive house." – Carey Mignery'04
